The Continental IV were a beloved soul quartet of the early '70s, and among the finest units featuring the "sweet" falsetto sound. Lead Freddie Kelly didn't get either the plaudits or hits of the Delfonics' William Hart, Blue Magic's Ted Mills, the Moments' Harry Ray, or the Stylistics' Russell Tompkins, Jr., but he had an equally arresting, ethereal falsetto. Kelly, Ronnie and Larry McGregor, and Anthony Burke recorded for the Jay Walking label. Their 1971 single "Day By Day (Every Minute of the Hour)" remains a ballad favorite, though it only reached number 19 on the soul charts. Latter-day soul vocalist Chuck Stanley covered it in the late '80s. The Continental IV's singles have been reissued on a Collectables CD, Dream World.
