This unique album, recorded in 1966, was an experiment to recreate, with four Chicago blues veterans, the sound of the blues string band that had been such a conspicuous feature of Southern country musical life. This sound had not been heard on record since the early 40s. Although several members of this group had become part of the Chicago electric blues band scene they took their basic musical motivation from the older blues styles they had learned as youth in the rural South. The result of this experiment was terrically successful, not only because the musicians were indeed able to recreate an older style but more importantly for the spirited, joyously funky and wholly unpretentious music that is thoroughly enjoyable on its own terms.
