The Carter Sisters were a Country music singing group consisting of June Carter (later June Carter Cash) and her sisters Helen Carter and Anita Carter. Formed during World War II, the group recorded and performed through at least the next five decades. When the original Carter Family trio stopped recording together after their WBT contract ended, Maybelle Carter formed Mother Maybelle & the Carter Sisters with her three daughters Helen Carter, Valerie June Carter (later known as June Carter Cash, following her marriage to Johnny Cash), and Anita Carter. The new group first aired on radio station WRNL in Richmond, Virginia, on June 1, 1943. The group . Later without Mother Maybelle Carter, the group of sisters performed as just The Carter Sisters. They also performed intermittently with June's daughter, Carlene Carter, as The Carter Family.
