The Bodds were a little known Edinburgh based group active in the late 1980's and early 90's, crafting a brand of Cartoon Grunge Pop the likes of which had never been heard before. Brothers Iain Og Mackay (drums) and Neil Nog Mackay (bass) joined school friends Gavin Gordon-Rogers (vocals) and Russell McLean (guitar) to form the band in 1989(?). Alan 'Alien' Bird was a sometime collaborator who added twangy guitar sounds on occasion. Some of their biggest crowd pleasers include the stadium-stormer 'Nora Batty', 'Honey Sweet' and 'Down'. They played regularly at Trader Vic's pub in Edinburgh's Grassmarket, and were the first band ever to play at infamous sweat-pit venue The Subway. They made enough money from that gig to buy one half-pint of weak lager each. They released several live 'tapes', the most famous of which, Tape Wun, is still recognised as a seminal moment in Scottish musical history, in particular their astonishing rendition of Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones. The band effectively split up in 1991(?) when guitarist McLean left to go to university in Bath. Several replacement guitarists were tried, most notably 'Malcolm' (surname unknown), who attempted to turn them into a heavy metal band. Unfortunately Malcolm was too good a guitarist and his relationship with the band was short-lived.
