about

The Blind Street Musicians of Cusco is a collective of street performers from Cusco recruited by ethnomusicologist and record label owner Bob Haddad, to record for his Music of the World label. All the musicians featured are blind street players who migrated to the city of Cusco from surrounding areas, as it is a somewhat common tradition for blind men to become street musicians. The peformers of these Andean folk recordings include Leandro Apaza Ramos, playing harp and singing, Benjamín Clara Quispe and Carmen Apaza Roca, mandolin players, and Fidel Villacorta Tejada, a quena player. Although the four musicians never played all together in these recordings, in their street performance careers they sometimes performed together under the name Los Serenos Huakaypata.
