The Bittersweet Empire is a four-piece alternative rock outfit based in the Illawarra, New South Wales, formed in 2010. The quartet originates from local high school acts Paranoid Youth, The Tokyo Crisis and Orange River Rising. Defining elements of the band include the use of three singers incorporating dual male-female vocals and rich atmospheric harmonies. Influences include a diverse range of bands such as Thrice, Birds of Tokyo, Paramore, A Day To Remember, Mumford and Sons and Tool. However, they are said to sound more similar to Snow Patrol and The Jezabels. The quartet's style generally involves calm melodic verses, uplifting choruses and dense, climatic finales Songwriter/guitarist Venura "Venz" De Zoysa contributes to their three part for harmonised vocals with lead vocalist Arapi Ilango and Sam “Proustitute” Proust who also is the bassist the majority of the group's songs. Proust and Venz are flexible within their roles occasionally switching between electric and bass guitar in addition to solo acoustic songs, which reflect on more intimate stories. The band is known for their humourous nonsensical song titles such as "Unravel me (Genghis Khan remix)" and "Peter Jackson Lost The Plot" as well as creative cover songs most notably their "Tik Tok" cover of Kesha. The band has played at a wide range of venues including youth centres, bars and their local university.
