The history of the Band of HM Royal Marines goes back to the 16th century. Music in the Royal Marines has always been connected with the decelopment of the other British military bands. Sprightly tunes and the steady beat of the drum allowed the marching Marines to keep a regular step. The drum was the instrument for giving signals on the battlefield. As long ago as the days of Sir Francis Drake and Sir John Hawkins the rhythm of the drummer would signal watches or beat the men to quarters.
