In 1974, a Time magazine article, entitled “Return of a Supergroup,” quipped that the supergroup was a “potent but short-lived rock phenomenon" which was an "amalgam formed by the talented malcontents of other bands.” Aside from the “short-lived” part, that definition pretty much also describes The 65’s. The indie-rock quartet hails from the suburbs of NYC and its line-up of talented malcontents include Joe Vocaturo on vocals and guitar; John Steele on drums; Cindi Merklee on bass and vocals; with Dan Smith on guitar and vocals. If you think you’ve heard some of those names before, it’s because you have. Vocaturo and Steele most recently played together in the alt-country band The Dark Brothers. Over the years, Joe also played with punk/rock outfits Puggle and c.i. Infidels while John’s sordid musical career included a long stint in Electric Frankenstein and guitar duties in The High School Sweethearts. Cindi cut her teeth in Balloon Squad in the 1990s and has spent the better part of the last decade making the rounds as a singer/songwriter. Dan was a part of the 1990s power pop trio Shirk Circus and has spent time on the acoustic circuit as well. A band comprised of rockers who are also accustomed to playing unplugged in coffee shops, The 65’s not only have the skills to write and perform sophisticated, intelligent music, but they also possess the unique ability to craft intimate lyrics and connect with an audience. That’s not to say they can’t bring it loud. In short,
