The Territory Band is Avant-Garde Jazz musician Ken Vandermark's large ensemble vehicle (outside of occasionally writing for the Tentet), and surely a group unifying what he's learned from a wide array of projects and influences. In name, it signifies the international nature of the contemporary improvisation climate. The Territory Band combines Vandermark's loyal cadre of Chicago musicians with his frequent collaborators from Europe β Norway, Sweden, Germany and England. The lineup has changed slightly over the years. The first version of the Territory Band was based on the concept of pairs: 2 brass : Jeb Bishop (US) and Axel Doerner (D), 2 woodwinds : Dave Rempis (US) and the leader, 2 strings : Kent Kessler (US) and Fred Lonberg-Holm (US), 2 percussion : Paul Lytton (UK) and Tim Mulvenna (US), with Jim Baker (US) being added on piano. The Following year the unit was expanded to twelve with Per-Ake Holmlander (SE) - tuba and Fredrik Ljungkvist (SE) - reeds. Hearing the possibilities inherent in a fuller range of brass and reeds Vandermark also decided to broaden the sound pallet to include the electronic work of Kevin Drumm (US), making the new version of the band one of the few large electro-acoustic improvising ensembles. Later the norwegian percussionist Paal Nilssen-Love will replace Tim Mulvenna and the electronic work will be made by Lasse Marhaug, other norwegian musician. The Territory Band has made six recordings : 1 : Transatlantic Bridge - 2001 2 : Atlas - 20
