Tatyana Nikolayeva (1924-1993) was a distinguished Russian pianist, best known for her performances and recordings of Bach and Shostakvoich. She came to attention at the Leipzig festival for the bicentennary of Bach in 1950. For the festival piano competition, she had memorised all forty-eight preludes and fugues from Bach's Das Wohltemperite Klavier, despite competition requirements only calling for one. This fact impressed Shostakovich, who was judging the competition, so much that he suggested her for first prize, and later wrote a complete set of twenty-four preludes and fugues for her. Though her reputation in the west was limited before the fall of communism she has since gained popularity, particularly for her recordings of Bach and Shostakovich.
