Sveriges Radio (aka SR) is the Swedish national broadcasting company. The Swedish public-broadcasting system is a public service institution in many respects modelled after its British counterpart, the BBC and Sveriges Radio shares many characteristics with it. It was founded 1925 as AB Radiotjänst as the state appropriated monopoly for broadcasting in Sweden. In 1955 The second channel P2 was started and the name was changed to Sveriges Radio. In 1962 the third channel Melodiradion was initiated which focused on light music and entertainment to counter off shore "pirate" radio broadcasters. It was eventually changed to channel P3 in 1977. The channels was gradually profiled and P1 became a speaking informational channel, P2 regional and educational and playing classical music. P3 remained the popular music channel. Program 4 (P4) was started in 1987 for regionally produced radio within Sveriges Radio. The governmental monopoly began break when satellite broadcasts became easier to recieve in the parabola explosion and in the 90s commercial radio was legalised and new private channels was started. Though Sveriges Radio remains a public service company owned by the state it is now under preassure of competition, but with governmental funding and some legal advantages over the commercial channels and to some extent for it's content it remains the most important and popular Swedish Radio company.
