Coming off of the break up of Japan on December 22, 1982, Steve Jansen and Richard Barbieri still wanted to make music together, and they did so under the name of Jansen/Barbieri. They would also later form The Dolphin Brothers in 1987 and release an album under that name as well. With Mick Karn, also formerly of Japan, Jansen and Barbieri created more music as Jansen/Barbieri/Karn, otherwise simply as JBK. Richard Barbieri was born on 30 November 1957 in London, England.
