Stephen Chatman is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory (BMus) and the University of Michigan (MM, DMA). He is the recipient of many awards in composition, including a Fulbright Grant, an MB Rockefeller Fund grant, a Dorothy Somerset Award, and the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The first Canadian ever short-listed in the BBC Masterprize competition (Tara's Dream, 2001), he is also the only North American to have won three consecutive BMI Awards to Student Composers. Chatman's orchestral music has been performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Radio Orchestra, Sydney, Seoul, San Francisco, Winnipeg, St. Louis, Calgary, Detroit, Quebec, Dallas, and New World symphonies. Born in 1950 in Faribault, Minnesota, he has been teaching at the University of British Columbia's School of Music, Vancouver, Canada since 1976 and is currently Professor and Head of Composition.
