David Murray, 15 November 1962, Hammersmith, London, England. Banton began his career on the sound system circuit in and around west London during the mid-70s, performing under the name Starkey Super. He eventually changed his name to Banton in acknowledgment of the Jamaican patois term for a DJ "full of lyrics".
