Stalk-Forrest Group was an interim name of the American band that became Blue Öyster Cult. Formed in 1967 as Soft White Underbelly (a name that BOC would occasionally revive in the 1970s and 1980s to play small club gigs around the United States and UK), and comprising guitarist Buck Dharma, drummer Albert Bouchard, keyboardist Allen Lanier, singers Jeff Kagel (aka Krishna Das) and Les Braunstein and bassist Andrew Winters, a bad review of a 1969 Fillmore East show caused their manager at the time, Sandy Pearlman, to change the name of the band – first to Oaxaca, then to Stalk-Forrest Group. They began recording tracks for their first Elektra album using the name Oaxaca. Ten tracks were completed in early 1970. Though recollections are sketchy, it appears that Elektra Records were none too pleased with these recordings, and all of them were shelved. Sandy Pearlman, ever persuasive, convinced Elektra to take yet another chance with the band. Elektra finally agreed, and in early 1970, the band began recording masters for another album. This time the recordings were made as Stalk-Forrest Group. An album was completed, mixed and mastered. However, Elektra decided again not to release any Stalk-Forrest Group recordings at all. Soon afterwards, Andrew Winters left the band and soon after that Stalk-Forrest Group was under no further obligation to Elektra's recording contract.
