The Stabsmusikkorps der Bundeswehr (StMusKorpsBw, literally Staff Band of the Federal Armed Forces) is the main representative brass band of the modern German military, the Bundeswehr, stationed in Berlin. It fulfills ceremonial duties as part of the Berlin Garrison Command, including playing national anthems and review marches for receptions of foreign leaders and ambassadors and performing traditional military rituals such as the Große Zapfenstreich (great tattoo) together with the Wachbataillon (guard battalion). The band can perform as a military marching band or as a symphonic wind orchestra or smaller chamber ensembles, and records classic German marches and other brass-band music. It consists of about 120 members of all ranks. The current Stabsmusikkorps der Bundeswehr is the second band in the Bundeswehr's history to bear this name. The initial Stabsmusikkorps was established 16 February 1957 as the Lehrmusikkorps, with 16 musicians, based at Rheinbach near Bonn, then the capital of West Germany. It took up ceremonial duties in the Bonn region and made its first studio recording later that year, moving to Siegburg in 1959. After German reunification in 1990 the functions of the capital were shifted to Berlin, and to facilitate official protocol a new military band was established in Potsdam as Heeresmusikkorps Ost (Army Band East), later moved to Berlin and renamed Heeresmusikkorps 400 (Army Band 400) and then Stabsmusikkorps Berlin.
