Spirit In Flesh was the psych-blues "house band" for the Brotherhood of the Spirit, later renamed Renaissance Community, an aquarian cult/commune based in Turners Falls, Massachusetts that was founded by the band's lead singer, Michael Metelica. They released a 1971 self-titled album with cover art featuring the band's original Warwick, MA dormitory, prior to their relocation (and eventual economic revitalization) of Turner's Falls. Metelica released a second album under the name in 1979, after the commune's relocation to Gill, MA, from which he would eventually be offered to leave and never return, by other community members in 1984, to the tune of $10,000. He accepted and the tenure of Spirit In Flesh ended thusly. The Renaissance Community disbanded a few years later in 1988.
