Spöön Fazer began as an avant-garde punk band in 1978 after seeing Frank Zappa, but devolved into a solo project for Simon Patterson who was known for playing his drums with spoons. Like Ziggy Stardust to David Bowie and Fad Gadget to Frank Tovey, Spöön Fazer was the stagename/alter-ego of England's Simon Patterson. Spöön Fazer can boast the title of owning the world's first synth drums which were purchased from their inventor, Dave Symmonds. Music 2 Live 2 = Music 4 Life was recorded in May 1980 with synth drums. Over the next two years using a drum machine and a stylophone-like instrument called "The Wasp," he recorded the Sunset EP. Perhaps due to its inclusion on a FlexiPop compilation, the song, "Bälläd öf the Insectmän" became Spöön Fazer's standout track. According to Spöön: "It is about the difference between human beings and insects. They used to say that if there was a nuclear war the only thing that would survive would be Insects. The word 'Sect' is used in English to mean a religion. So it was a play on words. Man - in - Sect (i.e. Human beings split by religious beliefs and fighting about them, in particular Christians, Muslims and Jews. Insectman on the other hand is a Super hero Archetype who survives the nuclear war!" Simon Patterson cites Philip Glass, Brian Eno and Bowie as musical and stylistic influences.
