Formed in March 1996, Source of Tide emerged from Norway’s thriving black metal scene, blending melodic elements with a dark, intense sound. The original lineup included Sven Tore Dammen (vocals), Atle Høidalen (guitar), Geir Hovland (bass), Pendragon (lead guitar), Gøran Flåtin (drums), and Cosmocrator (keys). Lineup changes soon followed. Gøran departed in 1997, prompting Cosmocrator to take over drums while continuing on keyboards. That same year, the band recorded their debut Dawn of Tides at the legendary Akkerhaugen Lydstudio with engineer Torbjørn Akkerhaugen, known for his work with Emperor. The band self-released the album under the Council of Nome label. Live performances were brief, as both Sven and Geir left shortly after. They were replaced by bassist Targenor and vocalist Lord PZ (also known from Peccatum), whose powerful delivery redefined the band’s sound. Guitarist Atle soon departed as well, making way for Taranis. By summer 1998, the revitalized lineup recorded the demo An Ode to the Art of Self Destruction at Symphonique Studio, engineered by Ihsahn of Emperor. The demo quickly drew attention, leading to a deal with Candlelight Records. Their debut full-length Ruins of Beauty, once again recorded at Akkerhaugen, marked Source of Tide’s official arrival and stands as a powerful statement of their vision. With a solid lineup and label support, Source of Tide became part of the first wave of Candlelight's new millennium roster. User-contributed text is a
