According to RA: One of electronic music’s foremost experimental voices goes singer-songwriter? Todd L. Burns calls Cologne to find out why Thomas Brinkmann is tired of techno. Thomas Brinkmann is one of the original techno minimalists, but he's always had an uneasy relationship with the genre. His music is often conceptual, and he's just as interested in the process of creating music as the result itself. His remixes of Hawtin’s Concept series, for instance, were made by spinning the original records on a homemade two-arm turntable and simply recording the results. His album Klick (2000) was created by sampling dusty and damaged records. You could say that each of his records has come with a hypothesis, as if Brinkmann was a scientist intent on recording the possibilities of his machines. Which is why his traditional turn on his most recent record is so surprising. When Horses Die is an album with real songs, acoustic textures, and Thomas Brinkmann doing his best Trent Reznor impersonation. Brinkmann? Singer-songwriter? It’s certainly a left turn that is going to divide opinion. Me? I initially found it deadly boring, but then I listened again. And then I couldn’t stop listening. It can have that type of hold on you, if you let it. But why the move to NIN territory, Mr. Brinkmann? “I’m tired of what’s going on with techno today. All of the refinery,” Brinkmann wrote in an email as we were setting up this interview. “All of the punk and soul from it is gone.” Intrigued
