Sora Kai, previously known as Makena, is an experimental post-hardcore band hailing from Chicago, Illinois, United States. The band is composed of Andrei, Dominic, Richard, Joe, and Steven. Each member brought their experience from previous bands, and came together to create something new and refreshing. Their journey began in June 2018 with the release of their debut single, "Better Days." The song gained considerable local attention after being played on Q101.1, a Chicago radio station. Inspired by this initial success, Sora Kai embarked on recording their first EP with producer Jordon Beal. On January 1, 2019, Sora Kai unveiled their self-titled debut EP 'Makena'. The release live show at the renowned Chicago venue Schubas sold out, captivating audiences with a unique sound that Alt Renegade described as "like nothing you've ever heard before." The band received a cease and desist letter for their former band identity, 'Makena'. As a result, they swiftly changed their name to Sora Kai, which also carries the meaning of 'sky and ocean'. Undeterred by this setback, Sora Kai launched their newest EP, 'Expedition,' under Famined Records. Released on June 4, 2021, 'Expedition' is a collection of the band's experiences and discoveries, showcasing their signature blend of pounding drums, captivating guitar work, soaring melodies, and vulnerable lyrics addressing various aspects of life, particularly mental health.
