Sophia Dussek née Corri, later Moralt (b. Edinburgh, May 1, 1775; d. London, probably 1831 - the date of 1847 usually given is actually that of her second husband) was a Scottish singer, pianist, harpist, and composer of Italian descent. In 1792, she married the composer Jan Ladislav Dussek. Her most famous work, the sonata in C Minor from Opus 2 sonatas (1797)was historically credited to her husband and , was undeniably her creation. None of her works, published during her lifetime appeared as by J L, but Pleyel only used the name Dussek on the Paris editions, as J L was known there, but Sophia was not. It was not until 1953 that the sonata in C minor from Opus 2 book 2 appeared under the name of JL, a misattribution by Nicanor Zabeleta. It has also been suggested that the six sonatinas were by her, but this is unfounded.Following Jan's death in 1812, Sophia married the violist John Alvis Moralt. The couple lived in Paddington, where she founded a music school. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
