The early music ensemble Sonus Borealis gave its first concert at Imatra in Easter 1999. Since then, the ensemble has had several performances each year in different parts of Finland. The repertoire of Sonus Borealis extends from the Middle Ages to the baroque period with a certain emphasis on 16th and 17th century music. The composition varies from a few instrumentalists to a vocal and instrumental ensemble of almost thirty people depending on the music being performed. The musicians of Sonus Borealis mostly come from Imatra or elsewhere in South Karelia. The ensemble includes amateur musicians, career-oriented students and professionals alike. Johannes Vesterinen, the cantor-organist of Imatra parish, has served as the artistic director since the very beginning. The Sonus Borealis official website is at www.sonusborealis.fi.
