There are at least four acts called Solo. 1. a Dutch indie singer-songwriter duo 2. an American hip-hop artist based in New York 3. an American rhythm and blues/soul musical group 4. a South African hiphop artist based in Johannesburg 1. Solo is the band name used by Dutch singer-songwriter Michiel Flamman and his musical partner-in-crime, Simon Gitsels. The duo released three albums of melodic, melancholic songs on the esteemed Dutch indie label Excelsior Recordings: Songs 'n Sounds (2004), Solopeople (2006) and Before We Part (2008), before splitting up. Flamman toured the third album on his own (Solo was finally solo...), but by 2010 this had petered out. A compilation album entitled This Is Solo (2010) was the final release. Flamman moved to Berlin and released an album under the moniker Unterwelten. Before working with Gitsels (in 2000, to be precise) Flamman also released an album as J Perkin and briefly fronted the band Perkin. Gitsels also relocated to Berlin, where his old friendship with Flamman was rekindled. This, ultimately, after both Flamman and Gitsels had moved back to their native Netherlands, led to the rebirth of Solo. It was first announced in late 2022. An album of old live recordings (Solo Live) was released in April 2023, followed by an EP of (mostly) shelved outtakes from 2008, entitled It Is Real (2024).
