Kansas City's Soft Reeds is the new project from Chicago native turned Kansas City transplant Ben Grimes. After spending six years fronting indie rockers The Golden Republic, who released a self-titled full-length and an EP called "People" in 2005 on Astralwerks/Capitol Records, Grimes found himself in Nashville, TN looking for some new creative outlets… preferably not involving music. Commenting on the move, Grimes said, "I was completely sick of being a musician, and I think had too many bad feelings associated with the whole thing. I just needed to be done. Take a breath for a minute and be done. It was liberating for a minute." But Nashville didn't let him off so easily. "There's a lot about the music industry in Nashville that I really can't put up with, but the magic of that place is how people are so driven to make something of themselves and improve in their craft. It really revived a lot of dormant feelings in me… helped me rediscover that sort of childlike wonder about the whole thing. That was the point when I started writing these songs." In a matter of months, Grimes had written the songs that would comprise most of the upcoming Soft Reeds album, and by fall of 2009 had relocated back to Kansas CIty to start work on it. With the help of musicians Josh Wiedenfeld, Phillipe Leitner, and Jordan Johnson, Grimes finished his new album "Soft Reeds Are Bastards", and it is scheduled to be released in the Summer of 2010.
