Bulgarian musical tradition that can be traced back to the early Middle Ages. There are many works by anonymous authors of sacred liturgic chants. Among the earliest known composers of Bulgarian Medieval Orthodox Music was John Koukouzeles (about 1280-1360), known as "the Angel". About 90 of his works have reached us today. He enriched Byzantine music with Bulgarian intonations, implemented reforms introducing polyphony and refined old musical notations. His most famous composition, "Polyeleos of the Bulgarian Woman", was dedicated to his Bulgarian mother. There are two traditions of church singing in Bulgarian Orthodox Church - eastern (monodic, one voice) and choral (polyphonic). Monodic Orthodox singing follows the laws of Byzantine music requirements of the eight-mode canon. Choral polyphonic singing, typical for the second half of the nineteenth century, emerged as a result of Bulgaria absorbing the influence of Russian polyphonic choral music. Many Bulgarian composers of the late XIX and XX centuries create their works in the spirit of Russian polyphony. Music Makers with great contribution to the development of Bulgarian Church Slavonic Music were: Peter Dinev - musicologist, composer and educator, a person of great merit for the preservation and study of medieval Bulgarian music for years working on the "translation" of Nevma signs in contemporary musical notations, which give new life and an opportunity to promote liturgical works of the first centuries of Christ
