Deconstruction and re-imagination. Skin Lake’s alternately bristling and lulling sound is that of archetypes deconstructed and re-envisioned; assimilated and intertwining, bumping up angrily against each other. Aspiring to more than merely a genre exercise, the New Bedford, Mass. quintet knowingly (and lovingly) dismantle the brutal self-indulgence of mid-90’s Screamo icons like Orchid and filter it back through a revolving set of stylistic lenses. Lush waves of psychedelic riffs and feedback recall British Shoegaze innovators Ride. Elsewhere emerge warm rhythmic drones indebted to the avant-garde compositions of Glen Branca. Alienating blasts of snotty thrash-punk bisect shimmering post-rock crescendos. Skin Lake are indie history scholars and style-hopping smart-asses.
