Artist
Born on 9th November 1945, Sipra Bose was the eldest child to her parents. Though not a musical family, her family provided utmost support when she started taking music lessons with the help of a harmonium brought from her maternal parents' home. Pdt. Chinmoy Lahiri whom she called "jethhu" (a name addressed to one's father's elder brother) implanted in her soul the burning passion for Indian Classical Music through his melodious singing style and his remarkable mentorship. The art of demonstration of the various Ragas was what she essentially learnt from him. One evening she performed a thumri in a small gathering of the musical maestros where she came under the notice of the Queen of Ghazals, Begum Akhtar. Another phase of rigorous training began in her career at Faizabad where "Malikaayein Ghazal" introduced her to the world of Ghazals, Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti, Jhula, Kajri and various genres of Classical and light-classical music. After the demise of Begum Akhtar, she became the disciple of Naina Devi. She has also received "taalim" from Pdt. Ravi Shankar. Her versatility in music needs no mention today. With equal excellence she proved her versatility by performing Bengali Modern Songs, Nazrul Geeti, Rabindrasangeet, Kirtan apart fro Khayal, Thumri, Bhajan, Ghazal and so on. Her sudden demise on 22nd April 2008 has created a vacuum in the space of Indian Classical Music. She has left behind many disciples, innumerable admirers, a range of musical memories and her music.
