With the influx of musicians and music styles that are in one day and gone the next, it has become increasingly difficult in today’s music scene to predict which artists will survive and which won’t. However, once in a while you come across a rare combination of skill, passion, talent and star quality such as that possessed by the 3-time SAMA award winning Maskandi duo, Shwi no Mtekhala. The Kings of Maskandi themselves, with their impressive list of accolades and two multi-platinum albums to their name, have proven that they are no “fly by nights” but genuine musicians with a vision to impact the South African music scene. They first made headlines nationwide when their 2004 release, Wangisiza Baba blew the nation away, with sales exceeding half a million copies. To this day, sales for this album continue to escalate. Then came the release of Angimazi uBaba (2006) which is fast reaching quadruple platinum status. Both of these received SAMA as well as SATMA awards for Best Selling Album for two consecutive years. Angimazi uBaba also won them a SAMA for Best Maskandi Album. In October 2006 they became the first ever Maskandi group to release a live DVD, which was recorded at their home at the Buyafuthi Hostel in Thokoza. The DVD has done equally well.
