Formed in 2002, Show Me State began playing music while their girlfriends studied architecture at University of California at Berkeley. A lineup of five members began playing shows in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2003: Jerry Jai on drums and guitar, Ian Chapman on guitar, Dan Culley-Rapata on bass, Ben Graves on guitar and drums, and Ian Frederick-Rothwell on keyboards. The self-released 1000K EP was followed by the CCAC/Western Heirs seven-inch on Hella Rad Records, both in 2003. Graves left the band to pursue a doctorate, and after playing as four for a short time, drummer Ping Chu was enlisted in 2005. A self-released, self-titled CD was released in early 2006. Later that year, Jai parted with the band to pursue solo projects, and Ping joined Boyskout on tour and currently plays in The Music Lovers. With drummer Will Lucas, the band's second full length, The Great Vowel Shift, was self-released in late 2011, and is available online at http://showmestate.bandcamp.com/ .
