Shivu Taralagatti

Shivu Taralgatti was born in a village of North Karnataka where his father used to sing devotional songs at the temple village and where the blacksmith made shepherds' flutes. But he was attracted by classical Hindustani music and charmed by the sitar. His first guru was R. V. Gudiyal. Then he spent the year 1958 in Bombay learning from Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, but went back home. He was singled out by singer Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur who invited him to attend his musicians' circle in order to build up his repertoire, to find his way among the niceties of rare or mixed ragas and to develop on the sitar the flowing melodious singing style of the Jaipur Athroli gharana For many years he taught sitar at Karnatak University. At present, with his reputation and long experience, he is often officially called abroad where his contribution to a better understanding of Hindustani music has brought new and wider audiences to the concert. Pandit Shivu Taralgatti has spent most of his life in a part of India that is the birth place of many musicians of renown. A highly talented musician, he has played widely and passed on his knowledge. He continues to to work tirelessly towards a better understanding of Hindustani music, not only on home ground, but also on foreign soil, touching all segments of society, serenely convinced that music knows no frontiers.
