Artist
Sherman Kelly (born in 1943 in Washington D.C.) is an American musician and songwriter who wrote the song "Dancing In The Moonlight" now most associated with French-American rock group King Harvest (who released the song in 1972) and English band Toploader (who had a worldwide hit with their version in 2000). During High School and later at Cornell University, Kelly started playing keyboards in Rock & Roll bands. In 1970 he joined the band Boffalongo (that also featured Larry Hoppen, later of Orleans, and his brother Wells Kelly). The original version of "Dancing In The Moonlight" was on the Boffalongo album "Beyond Your Head" released in 1970, with Kelly on lead vocal. After Boffalongo split in 1971, Kelly turned to scripting and scoring films. In 1973, after King Harvest had a hit with "Dancing In The Moonlight", Kelly was invited to join the band and tour in support of the hit record. Later that year they recorded an album that was only released in 2007 entitled "King Harvest: The Lost Tapes" that features five songs that Kelly wrote, or co-wrote, and on which he played and sang. During the later 1970s, Kelly co-wrote several songs for Orleans (of which his brother, Wells, was a member before his death). Kelly released the album "Burnin' The Candle" in 1970.
