Shem-Tov Levy, composer and musician- is an icon of Israeli culture. Shem-Tov is a part of the Israeli music scene since 1970 and is one of Israel's leading musicians, having had a varied solo career for many years as a composer, flutist and singer. Shem-Tov was born in 1950. He was trained as a classical flute player with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, but also absorbed the mix of sounds from his Bulgarian family roots and the Yemenite neighborhood, in which he grew up. Shem-Tov Levy started as young composing and arranging for many well known Israeli artists. Many of his songs have become Israeli classics. He was also part of three major important groups in Israel during the 70's. Levy has written musical scores for dozens of films, TV as well as music for theater and dance. He received three film academy awards for best soundtrack. Shem-Tov Levy is recognized as one of the musicians who have redefined the boundaries of Israeli music from which many successful musicians emerged. The present Shem-Tov Levy draws his inspiration from the musical roots in which he grew up. The ensemble, performs mainly original compositions that blend into the rich climate of ethnic music, adding music written by composers in a variety of genres; Balkan, Middle Eastern, Arab and Gypsy-Jazz.
