Mahala Rai Banda is a gypsy band based in the gypsy ghettos around Bucharest, Romania. The group's founders and nucleus are members of the second generetion of 'Taraf de haidouks' from the gypsy village of Clejani in Romania. The group's brass section is made up of brass band veterans from the Romanian Army. Historically, gypsies who were drafted into the Romanian army were directed to the brass bands in order that they would not be in line to rise up the chain of command.
