The Shams Ensemble is a musical group that performs Sufi, Kurdish folk and Persian traditional music with the Tanbur, Daf (frame drum), Ney and various other percussion instruments. The Shams Ensemble was established by Keikhosro Pournazeri's efforts in 1977 in Kermānshāh, Iran. He invited some of his students who were famaliar with playing Tenbur and gradually, obtaining knowledge and experience in playing and playing in band, they became well known Tenbur players. Intially, the group perfomed under the name of 'Tanbour-e-Shams' but adding Kurdish Folk music to their performances, they were published carrying the name of Shams Ensemble. Shams band initiated in the city of Kermānshāh, Western Iran, followed recording and publishing their album, 'Sound of love word' lead to international halls and festivals. Performances in France, Spain, Uzbekistan, India, the USA and Canada can be mentioned as well. The years of presentation have brought up more than fifty players and singers whom merely all of them were Pournazeri's students. After years of deprivation women as vocalists, setting double singers which made way for women to sing, Tenbur was accompanied by ladies for the first time. Shams' music has been song so far with voice of Kurdish and Iranian singers such as Shahram Nazeri, Bijan Kamkar, Heshmatolah Alahnejad, Jalal Mohamadian, Morteza Sharifian, Najme Tajadod and Maryam Ebrahimpour.
