Although Garcia was already recognized among Moscow’s leading guitarists, he originally graduated from a jazz school as a drummer, which contributed to the band’s precise and rhythmically complex arrangements. The original lineup also included drummer Andrey Sazonov and bassist/vocalist Mikhail Zhemchuzhny. The band’s debut performance took place in December 1986 and quickly attracted attention within Moscow’s underground metal scene. SHAH soon became one of the notable early thrash metal acts in the USSR. Their growing reputation led to a collaboration with Valery Gaina of the band Kruiz, who offered them management support and opportunities to perform at larger venues. SHAH released their first cassette album, Escape From Mind, in 1988. Shortly after the recording sessions, Zhemchuzhny left the band, and Garcia assumed vocal duties. Several bassists passed through the lineup, including Vasily Molchanov and Andrey Girnik, before Anatoly Krupnov (later known for Black Obelisk) joined the group. In 1988, SHAH began working on their next album, Beware. A five‑track demo attracted interest from Western labels, resulting in a recording contract in Germany.
