There are four artists with the name "Semantics": 1) Semantics is a punk rock quartet from Brisbane, Australia, formed in 2017. They have released 2 EPs and a number of singles to date, recently signing with the US-based label SideOneDummy in preparation for a full length in 2021. https://www.triplejunearthed.com/artist/semantics 2) Semantics is a short lived experimental trio from the 80's Downtown New York scene, consisted of Samm Bennett (drums, percussions), Ned Rothenberg (saxes, clarinet), Elliott Sharp (guitar, bass) They recorded only two albums the self titled in 1985 and Bone of Contention in 1987. Their style could be described as post-punk, Their jazz leanings are evident though, as well as Captain Beefheart influences. They could be compared to the likes as This Heat or Discipline era King Crimson. 3) The Semantics were a southern power-pop band from the early 1990s. The band consisted of Will Owsley (who later recorded as Owsley), Millard Powers, and Zak Starkey. Ben Folds was also an early member of the band. They played a style of direct, uptempo power pop that was reminiscent of Matthew Sweet, Fountains of Wayne, or Ben Folds Five. The band recorded their debut album "Powerbill" for Geffen Records, but were unceremoniously dropped by the label just before the album's scheduled 1993 release due to perceived unmarketability--it was too pop for grunge-soaked alternative radio, but too alternative for pop format radio.
