Sebastian Fagerlund

Sebastian Fagerlund (b.1972) has rapidly emerged as one of the most interesting young Finnish composers of his generation. He studied composition at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki under the guidance of Erkki Jokinen and received his diploma in composition in 2004. He has also attended composition masterclasses led by Michael Jarrel, Magnus Lindberg and Ivan Fedele. Currently Fagerlund works as a freelance composer based in Helsinki. His music has been described as flowing, fast-moving and rich in sound. The fast flow and rhythmic elasticity are often offset by fragile and lyrically sensitive episodes, and the shift between mobility and immobility is in fact one of the salient features of Fagerlund’s music. A highly virtuosic instrumental feel and a strong sense of musicianship is manifested in all his works, creating musical dramas in which powerful expression is combined with intensity and communicativeness. Fagerlund's music has been performed at several major music events around the world. His main oeuvre has always been the orchestra: his Clarinet Concerto was a roaring success and it has been performed several times since the premiere in 2006; the orchestral work Isola, commissioned by Korsholm Music Festival, was premiered in 2007 and has since then been on the repertoire of several orchestras.
