This Dutch chamber ensemble is also known as the Schönbrunn Ensemble or the Ensemble Schönbrunn, sometimes also spelled as Schoenbrunn Ensemble and has released several albums under these names. Their artistic leader Marten Root is an internationally renowned specialist in the field of eighteenth and nineteenth century flutes and founded the ensemble in the mid-eighties in the Netherlands. He is also the principal flute in the Netherlands Bach Society and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner. The size and the combination of instruments of the ensemble varies, depending on the repertoire, from trio to nonet. # Schönbrunn Ensemble Amsterdam This ensemble merits attention for its historically grounded approach to eighteenth and nineteenth-century repertoire, guided by Marten Root's deep expertise in period flutes. Rather than imposing modern sensibilities, the group explores how these works originally sounded through careful instrumental selection and performance practice research. Their recordings reveal forgotten acoustic possibilities—how a fortepiano's resonance differs from a modern piano, how period strings articulate differently. This archaeological precision doesn't feel academic; instead, it opens fresh listening experiences even to familiar works. The ensemble's thoughtful curation and technical mastery invite listeners to reconsider what "authenticity" means in classical music.
