Scary B.O.O.M. is a Russian psychobilly band that originated in Kupchino, one of the least prestigious districts of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). Known for their energetic and rebellious sound, the band emerged in response to the harsh realities of post-Soviet life, combining high-speed psychobilly with a diverse range of musical influences. Scary B.O.O.M. was formed by three childhood friends who found an outlet in music amidst the social and economic turbulence of the late Soviet and early post-Soviet era. The band persisted despite challenges such as the prevalence of homemade drugs, poor-quality alcohol, and the restrictive policies of Mikhail Gorbachev’s reforms. Their early music was characterized by raw intensity and a refusal to adhere to conventional styles. Over the years, the band’s sound has evolved, reflecting a variety of musical influences. Frontman Kirill Ermichev has emphasized the importance of maintaining a rebellious spirit, stating: “The main thing is for the music to keep the rebellious spirit, doing away with all the canons, and the wild energy we inherited from our ancestors who danced around campfires.” Scary B.O.O.M. has received multiple accolades throughout their career. They are two-time winners of the Cactus Independent Music Award and have also been recognized at various music festivals. In 2006, they won the Best Script Award for their video Heart of the Abyss at the Kinorok Rock Video Festival, as well as the Best Band Award at the Altomo
