Sam Carter is a British guitarist, singer and songwriter, originally from the English Midlands but more recently based in Sheffield. He has released a series of albums of mainly original material which fall loosely into the folk/roots category. Carter is the winner of the "Horizon" award for best newcomer at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2010. He is one-half of False Lights. He studied guitar with Martin Simpson and, early in his career, supported artists including Rachel Unthank & The Winterset, Davey Graham, Spiers & Boden, Findlay Brown and John Smith. In summer 2007 he took part in a collaborative project with Nitin Sawhney which culminated in a performance at the Royal Festival Hall and as a result was appointed Emerging Artist in Residence at the Southbank Centre. He supported Bellowhead on their 'Matachin' album launch tour, playing to capacity crowds at venues across the UK including Koko in London. Carter released his second album, The No Testament, in August 2012. Carter released his third album How The City Sings in April 2016. In May 2020 Carter released his fourth studio album "Home Waters". Towards the end of 2014 Carter partnered with fellow roots musician Jim Moray in a "folk rock" venture named False Lights.
