Sam & Ruby was American musical duo Sam Brooker and Ruby Amanfu. The duo was based in Nashville and recorded two EPs and one full-length album. They were signed to the Rykodisc record label. Their song "Heaven's My Home" was featured on the movie and soundtrack The Secret Life of Bees. They were both members of the A Capella group The Collective featured on Season 3 of NBC's The Sing-Off. Their album The Here And The Now was released in 2009. The album was named "Album of the Year" by the Associated Press in their top ten albums of the year list. Brooker grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He says that James Taylor was probably the biggest hero in his household, with his brother into funk – Parliament, Bootsy’s Rubber Band, Prince. Brooker formed a band while in high school. Amanfu, who was born in Ghana, has spent most of her life in Nashville. Her father, a computer scientist, was recruited by a Tennessee-based firm, and he moved his family to Nashville when she was just three. A chance to perform at the 2005 South By Southwest music festival in Austin officially made the pair into a duo. A year later they were invited to play at Voodoo Music Experience in New Orleans where they also decided to record an EP that would contain, in more rudimentary form, some of the tracks that would eventually make their way onto their debut full length.
