Jeremy Pahl, known by his stage name Saltwater Hank, is a musician whose heart beats with the rhythm of his Ts’msyen heritage. From the La̱xsgyiik (Eagle) clan of Txałgiiw (Hartley Bay), residing in La̱x Kxeen (Prince Rupert), on the land of his ancestors, he grew up with the Ts’msyen Sm’algya̱x speaking people of the northwest coast of British Columbia. Jeremy is surrounded by the echoes of his ancestors and the melodies of his family's songs and from a young age, he felt the pull of his cultural roots, drawn to the stories and traditions of the Ts’msyen life. Motivated by a desire to embody his Ts’msyen identity, Jeremy’s inspiration comes from the traditions that have been passed down through generations. He is genuinely immersed in the teachings of his elders, recognizing the importance of harnessing the language and melodies of his ancestors. Guided by the legacy of his great-great- grandmother, a revered songwriter of traditional songs, Jeremy is committed to preserving the purity of Ts’msyen’s musical heritage, untainted by Western influences. Jeremy’s musical style is a fusion of raw authenticity and modern innovation. He seamlessly blends pre-contact melodies and lyrics with the energy of rock and roll. Influenced by early punk rock icons such as the Dead Kennedys and the Sex Pistols, to legendary blues artists like Mississippi, Fred McDowell, and Memphis Minnie, Jeremy's music expresses his artistic style while staying true to his cultural roots.
