The Sacred Cowboys are a band that began in Melbourne, Australia in 1982. There has been numerous incarnations of the band from that time up until the present. The one constant has been vocalist and lyricist Garry Gray. Other members over the years have included Mark Ferrie (bass, guitar), Terry Doolan (guitar, backing vocals, record production), Ian Forrest (guitar, synth), Andrew Picouleau (bass), Janis 'Johnny Crash' Friedenfelds (drums), Nick Rischbieth (bass), Stephan Fidock (drums), Penny Ikinger (guitar), Spencer Jones (guitar) and Ash Wednesday (synth). The Cowboys debuted in 1982 with a 45rpm single 'Nothing Grows in Texas'/'Is Nothing Sacred' on Mushroom Records offshoot, White Label records. The follow up to this was the independently released (and extremely rare) 45 rpm single 'Bangkok'/'Limbo Jig'. The White Label subsequently followed this up in Australia with a self-titled 6 track EP in 1983. An expanded version of this disc was released in France and Canada as a full length LP. Personal issues with Garry Gray caused the band to cease operations at this point and an album of previously recorded cover versions ('We Love You... of course we do!') was issued by Man Made Records in 1984. The band reconvened to record the album 'Trouble From Providence' for the Citadel label in 1986. This album also had a European release on the Normal label in Germany. The album also spawned two 45rpm singles ('Trouble from Providence'/'Canned Goods' and 'Hell Sucks/'Trouble from
