Born at the end of 1981 to Balinese-Minangkabau parents, Nengah Krisnarini discovered her passion for music at an early age; singing random melodies and lyrics which usually bothered her older brother at the time because he did not recognize any of them. It turned out that she wasn’t singing someone else’s songs, they were hers. Later in middle school, her classmates recognized her soothing yet strong voice and asked her to join his band. In 1997, she won the best vocalist title in Tawuran Musik Levi’s, a band festival held by a very famous radio station in Indonesia. She also received similar title during her study in Australia from “Terbaik”, a band competition for Indonesian students in Sydney. She wrote a few songs during that period, yet not until she gained her bachelor degree and got back to Indonesia that she realized her potential in songwriting and decided to take it more seriously. She also developed an interest in music programming after listening to some remixes on Jazz standards. This lead her to Sister Duke, which was initially a duo formed in 2005 with one of her fellow band mates while in Sydney. But after a year of musical journey in Sister Duke together, her partner decided to pull out. Feeling the urge to continue the legacy, Sister Duke then became her solo project.
