SCHAFT is a Japanese industrial supergroup consisting of 今井寿(Imai Hisashi: BUCK-TICK) and 藤井麻輝 (Fujii Maki: SOFT BALLET, minus(-)), with a rotating group of collaborators. They made their debut on Victor Invitation's compilation DANCE 2 NOISE 001 with the song 'nicht-titel' in 1991, and later released their debut album Switchblade through XEO Invitation in 1994. Contributors to the album include members of Coil, Autechre, Meat Beat Manifesto, and more. Raymond Watts of PIG, who was a core contributor on the album, also made a few tour appearances with Imai and Fujii in Japan. Footage from the Switchblade tour, specifically their performance at Shibuya Public Hall with Watts, would later be released as Switchblade — Visual Mix. In addition, a remix EP of Switchblade titled Switch was released later in the year. Afterward, SCHAFT would remain dormant as Imai continued musical activities with BUCK-TICK and Fujii returned to SOFT BALLET, only contributing a remix to Zilch's 1999 album Bastard Eyes during the time period. SCHAFT's second wave of activities would arrive in 2015, when they announced their reunion along with a series of concerts entitled TOUR ULTRA –The Loud Engine–. Their second album, ULTRA, was released at the beginning of 2016 through Victor Entertainment/JVC, along with the box set SCHAFT ARCHIVES, which included reissues of Switchblade, Switch, and both the CD and DVD incarnation of Switchblade — Visual Mix, with the CD renamed as ONE HOUR OVERDRIVE.
