Artist
Sähkökvartetti was the name of a project for electronic music led by M A Numminen and a synthesizer built for Numminen by Erkki Kurenniemi at the end of the 1960s. Numminen presented this "electric quartet" in musical performance pieces. When performing at the Bulgarian Communist Youth Festival, Numminen's performance drove away most of the thousand-strong crowd. Numminen and Sähkökvartetti were barred from partcipating in the festival. The device itself was a conglomerate of synthesizers, where an "electric violin" controlled by a potentiometer was combined with an electric drum kit and a part that produced electronic melodies. To play the instrument, four assistants were needed. The only recording of the device is included in Numminen's piece Kaukana väijyy ystäviä (Far Away Lurk Some Friends).
