Born in Pietermaritzburg in 1962, Roger was brought up in apartheid South Africa. Attending Cape Town University medical school in the 1980s, he left South Africa in 1989, avoiding conscription and gaining important international experience. He is a prolific and diverse writer, influenced by politics, comedy and social conscience, but few of his songs have been recorded. He has played with many artists over the years including accomplished cellist Christie Staudhammer and South African performers Aden Hinds and Barbie Meyer. He played with Guelph slide guitarist/songwriter Malachi Greenidge in the duo Holy Joe & the sKeptiK during his sojourn in British Columbia and in the 1990s toured Australia after joining friend Scott Blackley as bassist in the transcontinental powerpop band Hoop. He spent 15 years as a travelling doctor and musician before settling on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. He spends part of each year performing in South Africa.
