EB3 came about through Robin Eubanks' love for using electronics with his trombone and his desire to have a fusion band. He grew up inspired by the music of James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, Led Zeppelin, the Mahavishnu Orchestra and others. Robin developed a love and respect for jazz a few years later. On Live Vol. 1, Robin returns to his roots - in instrumental funk, rock, latin and R&B. Joined by fellow Philadelphia native pianist Orrin Evans (Russell Gunn, Branford Marsalis, Mingus Big Band and Will Calhoun) and drummer Kenwood Dennard (a professor at the Berklee College of Music and former drummer for Stanley Jordan, Jaco Pastorius, Pat Martino and Maceo Parker), Eubanks uses various effects processors to alter his trombone sound, including effects that help him emulate an electric guitar. He also makes use of a percussion pad with programmed sounds and loops that he creates, on the spot, to complement himself as he plays his horn. EB3 does not have a traditional bass player. Each member of the band plays bass parts on a keyboard at some point. Dennard's signature one-man drummer and bass is startling, as he is able to play full set with his right hand and feet, while at the same time playing bass lines on the keyboard with his left hand. Evans plays melodies, chords, textures and solos, while he also fills in the bass parts. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
