Around the age of 11 he noticed in himself an irresistible urge to play, preferably on the school piano, all the melodies which he heard and which appealed to him. He would creep up to the piano whenever he could, not minding the consequences. Obviously, his grades at school were affected (especially the general demeanor mark), but he remained stubbornly focused on his goal. When his parents became aware of the situation, they bought him an acoustic guitar - which was the only way of pulling him away from the school piano, at which he kept spending his time instead of attending classes. His father taught him several chords and a few Beatles' songs. He also started attending classical guitar lessons. All this went on in the eighties. His teacher had been preparing for a long time for a tour around the US. He practiced for many hours each day, working extremely hard. Then, when everything was set and he was ready to go, his plans were shattered: martial law was introduced in Poland and his tour had to be cancelled. He taught Robert the basics of harmonics and composition. At the age of 14, he heard the first Van Halen record and went crazy about their music on the spot, compelled particularly by Eddie Van Halen's guitar playing. His first real guitar was made for him by a friend who is a professional guitar maker. It is one of his favorites to this day. A lot of heart and the best materials were put into creating it.
